The organic food industry, estimated at USD 26 billion in total revenues in 2004, has been growing at ~25% per year over the past 10 years. Critics of the industry make various arguments that the certification system is sometimes inadequate or that such food is not for everyone or that yields are lower than conventional. These acquisations are generally false, and are mostly claimed by special interest groups. Solid research shows that organic food is cleaner and more wholesome than conventional food of the same variety. And yields are not necessarily smaller for many products.
Organic agriculture is known to the novice as agriculture that does not use chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers. This is true, yet organic agriculture is so much more. It is agriculture which depends on healthy soil to produce healthy plants with higher immunity to resist attacks by diseases and pests, resulting in higher yields of cleaner and more wholesome agricultural products. The basic organic cultivation principles closely follow the rules of nature such as recycling natural materials into the soil to maintain soil fertility and encouraging natural methods of pest and disease control to increase biodiversity in the region. Organic agriculture allows all species to coexist peacefully in a symbiotic relationship because every element of nature - animals, insects, plants, microorganisms, and soil - all work together to create a natural cycle on the organic farm.
